Who funds the narratives shaping India’s political debate? The Enforcement Directorate’s investigation into NewsClick has brought foreign funding, alleged China links and questions over editorial independence back into the spotlight.
The ED has alleged that funds linked to US-based businessman Neville Roy Singham flowed to NewsClick through foreign investment and payments described as media-service exports. Investigators have also cited emails involving NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and other individuals as part of their allegations of a wider network promoting narratives favourable to China.
The case has taken a fresh turn after the Delhi High Court quashed the underlying FIR and connected money-laundering proceedings in May 2026. The ED has challenged that ruling in the Supreme Court. NewsClick has denied the allegations, maintaining that it is an independent news organisation.
What do the alleged financial links and email exchanges reveal? Where does legitimate international collaboration end and alleged foreign influence begin? And what questions should be asked about funding, transparency and editorial independence?
On The Hard Facts with Rahul Shivshankar, we examine the NewsClick controversy, the alleged international funding network and the wider debate over foreign influence in India’s public discourse.
