The Election Commission of India has launched a strong legal defence of its decision-making process, filing a counter-affidavit in the Supreme Court amid allegations that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar acted unilaterally on key matters linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The ECI has argued that the petition challenging the CEC’s functioning relies entirely on a single news report. It says the three SIR orders issued in June 2025, October 2025 and May 2026 were unanimous decisions of the full three-member Commission, comprising Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The affidavit itself, the poll body says, was unanimously approved.
