Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has declared victory in Michigan’s closely watched US Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers in a major breakthrough for the Democratic Party.
“Michigan, we did it!” El-Sayed told cheering supporters in Detroit as he celebrated the historic win. His victory makes him the first Muslim elected to the US Senate and ensures that the seat remains in Democratic hands following Senator Gary Peters’ retirement.
The former public health official campaigned on issues including affordable healthcare, lowering costs for working families and reducing corporate influence in politics. His victory marks a significant moment in the US Midterm Elections 2026.
