Yemen’s military said on Saturday it had launched attacks against Iranian-backed Houthi forces across several frontlines, in retaliation for recent Houthi attacks that killed troops and civilians in central and eastern Yemen. Military spokesperson Colonel Majed al-Nazili said the operation targeted Houthi forces and capabilities along multiple axes, without providing further details. He said the attacks were aimed at protecting military personnel and civilians from what he described as repeated Houthi attacks in Marib and Hadramout. The escalation between the Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognised government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, has raised fears of a renewed civil war after a four-year lull following a U.N.-brokered truce in April 2022. U.N. envoy Hans Grundberg warned on Friday that Yemen faced its greatest risk of renewed large-scale conflict since the truce and urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint and return to U.N.-brokered negotiations.
