Kenya and Tanzania are racing to build rival rail corridors connecting East Africa’s landlocked economies to the Indian Ocean. Kenya has restarted construction of the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha toward Kisumu and Malaba, while Tanzania is pushing ahead with its 506-kilometre Tabora-Kigoma SGR. The stakes go far beyond trains. Mombasa and Dar es Salaam are competing to become the main gateways for Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and eastern DR Congo. If completed, these rail networks could give landlocked countries more choices, lower trade bottlenecks and reshape how goods and minerals move across East Africa.
