A major wildfire broke out in woodland near Italy’s Lake Garda late on Friday, forcing around 200 residents and tourists to evacuate, according to the Riva del Garda Fire Brigade. The fire began in the hilly area of Tignale in Brescia province and threatened several homes, about five holiday homes and a holiday complex. Around 80 people, including firefighters, Carabinieri and Civil Protection personnel, were deployed to battle the blaze, which burned about 4,500 square metres of woodland. Three Canadair firefighting aircraft and two helicopters were also used in the operation. Authorities brought the fire under control by Saturday, allowing those evacuated to return to their accommodation.
