Kosovo’s parliament descended into disorder on Saturday after opposition lawmaker Time Kadrijaj threw eggs at acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti during a session to constitute the country’s new legislature. Kadrijaj was seen chanting “shame, shame” as she threw the eggs toward Kurti, prompting security officers and lawmakers to intervene before acting Assembly Speaker Avni Dehari suspended the session. The confrontation came after Kurti again requested additional time for negotiations over the formation of Kosovo’s new institutions. Opposition parties have accused Kurti of prolonging the political deadlock as lawmakers struggle to elect a permanent speaker. Kurti’s Vetevendosje party won the most seats in a June 7 snap election but failed to secure a governing majority, leaving Kosovo without fully functioning institutions. The election was the country’s third national vote in less than 18 months. The prolonged stalemate has delayed the formation of government institutions, hindered access to international funding and slowed Kosovo’s efforts to advance toward European Union integration.
