Food recalls really did spike this summer, and so did the number of people getting sick.
A lot of people are treating that like one story, but the CDC has confirmed 18,445 cases of Cyclospora since May 1, up from 1,180 last summer, while the recall count is a separate thing entirely.
Some blamed the CDC’s cuts for the outbreak, but FactCheck found the states hit hardest weren’t even in the tracking program that changed, though the same fact-check says other staffing cuts likely did slow the response.
