The Filo Jet ferry began to bounce and skitter off the waves only a few miles out to sea.
Frightened passengers called on the captain, who has been named by the authorities as Mustafa Oz, to turn back to port in Girne on the coast of the breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
But the captain, Mustafa Oz, 66, ploughed on, according to survivors interviewed in local media.
“Three or four minutes later, the ferry leapt high into the air, then came crashing down,” Efe Multici told CNN Türk.
“The front left side burst open and water started pouring in.”
