Why is Bukele Invading Haiti? | The Link

El Salvador’s Bukele Declares War on Haiti’s Gangs. Donroe Doctrine in Play? The man who crushed El Salvador’s gangs has taken his war abroad.

More than 2,000 Salvadoran soldiers are now in Haiti, a country where gangs control most of the capital, more than 1.5 million people have fled their homes, and there has been no president since 2021. The trigger was an ambush on 18 October that left four Salvadoran aviation technicians missing. When an aid group handed over four bodies, Bukele rejected them: “Not our men.”

But this story is bigger than one rescue mission. Bukele cleared the deployment with Donald Trump. Blackwater founder Erik Prince’s firm is already fighting Haiti’s gangs with drones, using Salvadoran contractors. And Washington, while keeping its own troops out, is watching closely.
Is this a regional ally stepping in where the UN has struggled? Or is it the “Donroe Doctrine”: America shaping its backyard through strongmen and private contractors? Shubhangi Sharma explains.
