Indian pilot Smit Machchhar became the focus of global attention after reportedly being stabbed inside the cockpit of a Flydubai flight, yet some Western media outlets placed the word hero in quotation marks when describing him. In this video, Firstpost examines how The Guardian, BBC, Bloomberg, AFP and others framed Machchhar’s actions, and compares that language with their past coverage of Western pilots such as Sully Sullenberger and Tammie Jo Shults. The video also looks at descriptions of the cockpit incident as an ‘altercation’ or ‘fight’, and examines how wording can shape the way major events are understood. It also revisits coverage of the Air India AI171 crash and the distinction between preliminary findings and established facts. Hem Saroya tells you more.
