Morocco’s appointment of Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as its first female prime minister has reignited debate over women, power and political leadership. A controversial Islamic saying questioning women’s ability to govern has sparked scrutiny even before she can demonstrate her leadership. From Morocco’s gender inequality and conservative traditions to the experiences of Sanna Marin, Theresa May and Hillary Clinton, this report examines the double standards women face in politics. Why are female leaders judged differently from men? As women remain underrepresented in positions of power worldwide, we explore the barriers to equality and why leadership should be judged by actions, not gender. Hem Saroya tells you more.
