BELGRADE, Serbia — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Serbia on Friday, August 7, for his first-ever official visit to the country, meeting Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade for talks that will continue through Saturday. “We will discuss expanding economic ties between our countries, relations with the European Union, other areas that can benefit our nations, and security issues,” Zelensky wrote after his arrival, adding he would also meet with Serbian Prime Minister Đuro Macut. The visit is seen as symbolic given Serbia’s traditionally close ties with Russia. Vučić has refused to join international sanctions against Moscow, citing historic ties between the two Slavic nations, saying ahead of Zelensky’s arrival that “Serbia has established its policy” on sanctions and “this will remain so for the time being.” Reports have suggested Serbia has indirectly supplied arms to Ukraine through intermediary countries, though Vučić has publicly denied this. The trip follows Vučić’s own first visit to Ukraine in June 2025 for the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit in Odesa, where he stopped short of signing a joint declaration denouncing Russia’s invasion.
