Tukaram Mundhe, Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration commissioner, has launched a sweeping food-safety crackdown across the state, with reportedly more than 3,000 raids targeting restaurants, hotels, food businesses and other establishments. Action has involved major brands, a Mumbai McDonald’s outlet, cricket clubs and even Bombay High Court canteens. The Maharashtra FDA has also banned analogue paneer for one year, prohibited loose edible oil and restricted newspaper wrapping for vada pav. Mundhe has issued notices to actors including Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn over alleged surrogate advertising. The crackdown comes amid concerns over unsafe food, poor hygiene and compliance, while some businesses have challenged the enforcement in court. Hem Saroya tells you more.
