Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as an “outstanding statesman” during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin, calling Putin the “most acceptable political figure” for Central Asia, Europe and the wider world.
Tokayev also said the military operations in Ukraine should be frozen to create a path toward diplomatic negotiations, while arguing that an immediate end to the war would be unrealistic under current conditions.
Merz took a different position, saying Russia was not currently interested in serious negotiations. The German chancellor said Berlin would continue supporting Ukraine militarily, politically, financially and economically.
Merz also said Russia would not win the war and would face significant damage, including to its economy, while Germany continued its efforts to bring the conflict to the negotiating table.
