Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in New York to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly, leading a high-level delegation amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Araghchi made a brief stop in Doha before travelling to New York, where he is expected to hold talks with foreign ministers and other officials on the sidelines of the General Assembly. He also held a phone call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the Assembly’s agenda and international peace and security.
Araghchi’s visit comes amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the U.S. and Israel. Iran says it plans to use the UN forum to present its position and defend what it describes as the rights and interests of its people.
His visit also comes amid a visa dispute, with Washington allowing the core Iranian delegation to attend the UN meeting while reportedly denying visas to several members of the wider delegation, including members of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s media team.
