Elon Musk is pitching Starlink as an essential technology for India, presenting satellite internet as a way to bridge connectivity gaps and improve access to critical services. But CNN-News18’s Shivani Gupta questions whether this narrative tells the whole story.
In this discussion, Shivani examines Musk’s business interests, the national security implications of satellite communications and the potential cost of Starlink for Indian consumers. She also questions whether a service that could be more expensive than existing alternatives is the right solution when less than 2% of India’s territory reportedly lacks internet or mobile coverage.
The conversation explores why Musk is positioning himself as a solution to India’s connectivity challenges, whether his public service narrative adequately addresses commercial interests, and why satellite internet cannot be viewed simply as a technology issue.
Shivani also weighs in on the response from Indians, arguing that Musk cannot expect to influence the Indian market by simply imposing his views.
Is Starlink essential for India, or do its costs, security implications and commercial interests demand closer scrutiny?
