Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé is at the centre of a controversy in China after a viral video featuring his remarks about a meme depicting him as a Chinese dictator triggered a backlash. Two major Chinese brands, beverage company Dongpeng and dairy giant Mengniu, have announced that they are ending their partnerships with the French footballer. The controversy centres on a clip in which Mbappé reportedly describes a favourite meme as one featuring a ‘Chinese dictator’. The footage appears to reference imagery associated with former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, prompting criticism on Chinese social media. The backlash highlights the cultural and political sensitivities surrounding Mao’s legacy in China — and the risks international celebrities face when viral jokes collide with national sentiment. Mbappe had previously spoken about memes depicting him as a dictator, saying that while some were intended as humour, comparisons with historical figures responsible for mass suffering were less amusing. From the reaction online to the commercial consequences for two major brands, this is how a meme became a global sports and business controversy. Josh Barnes brings you the story on Firstpost Live.
