Brazil’s incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has edged past his rival, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, to win an unprecedented fourth term, according to Brazil’s official election body.
In Sunday’s run-off, Lula received more than 51 percent of the vote, while Bolsonaro trailed slightly with 48 percent.
Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin gave a last-minute order to extend voting by two hours after Lula’s campaign complained that public transport to the polls was reduced in key areas.
Bolsonaro’s campaign also requested an extension, citing heavy rains that shut polling stations in the south, a right-wing stronghold.
Bolsonaro has already signalled that he plans to seek the annulment of the vote, with legal challenges over the voting extension on the horizon.
