A direct missile strike on King Khalid Airport by Houthi forces has pushed Saudi Arabia into a profound strategic dilemma. As Riyadh faces a barrage of attacks and depleted defense stockpiles, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly offering military assistance to shield the Kingdom—a calculated move designed to draw Saudi Arabia into the Abraham Accords.
However, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is resisting an open alliance, knowing a visible Israeli presence would severely undermine Saudi standing across the Islamic world.
To understand this high-stakes geopolitical standoff, we must look at the century-old history of Yemen. This episode of The Global Radar explores the tale of two Yemens: the fiercely independent northern mountains historically ruled by Zaydi Shia Imams, and the southern region defined by over a century of British colonization.
From the 1962 Arab nationalist revolution and the Arab world’s only Marxist state, to the broken unification of 1990 and the rise of Ansar Allah (the Houthis), we unpack the historical grievances fueling today’s conflict.
This is not just a modern proxy battle. It is a fight over the history, identity, and future of Arabia’s southern corner.
Watch the full deep dive to understand the historical forces shaping the Middle East today.
