India’s ‘Cockroach’ protesters are back. The Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) is holding a protest in Mumbai and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with electoral reforms and greater transparency over voter rolls.
The CJP rose to national prominence after protests over exam-paper leaks and education reforms. The movement now plans demonstrations across India in October, culminating in a rally in Delhi.
The protests come amid controversy over India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, concerns reported by election commissioners, and opposition demands for the CEC’s resignation. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of wrongdoing and said differing views are part of its decision-making process.
