In less than five days, Yemen’s Houthi fighters seized more than 2,600 square kilometres of coastline and pushed to within striking distance of one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes.
By Friday, the rebels had taken effective control of the approaches to the Bab el-Mandeb strait, the narrow gateway at the southern mouth of the Red Sea.
As oil prices surged and the offensive gathered pace, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman telephoned Donald Trump twice on Thursday, urging him to launch American strikes against the Houthis.
