Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says he has spoken with US President Donald Trump in recent days as tensions between Washington and Ottawa continue to escalate over trade.
Carney said the conversations involved global issues including Ukraine and Iran, while stressing that Canada still needs to work with the United States despite the deepening trade dispute.
On trade, Carney said the issue is not about emotion but about Canadian sovereignty. He reiterated that Canada is ready to strike a fair, mutually beneficial deal with the United States and said he and his negotiating team are ready to engage when Washington is prepared.
The comments come after trade negotiations broke down and both countries introduced retaliatory measures. Canada has maintained that any agreement must protect its economic interests, independence and sovereignty.
