BELGRADE, Serbia — A Serbian Army helicopter flew through thick smoke on Friday as crews battled a major wildfire sweeping through pine forests in the Deliblatska Peščara (Deliblato Sands) nature reserve, located roughly 70 kilometers northwest of Belgrade near the villages of Čardak and Šumarak. Regional television reported that residents of Šumarak were asked to leave their homes as a precaution, though authorities said no houses had caught fire and no casualties had been reported. Another major fire raged separately near the central town of Kraljevo, as multiple blazes burned across the country amid a blistering heatwave that pushed temperatures to 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) and worsened prolonged drought conditions. Following an emergency meeting on Friday, Serbia’s Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said the army had been brought in to help emergency crews, and the government urged state companies to contribute any spare equipment and personnel to the firefighting effort. Strong winds across the country complicated containment efforts. The wildfires are part of a broader pattern affecting the Balkans and much of Europe this summer, with the extreme heatwave setting national temperature records and straining energy systems across the region.
