An emotional mother-son reunion has brought a rare moment of hope amid the devastation caused by Nepal’s deadly flash floods. Eight-year-old Zoyal Ghale and his brother were at school when torrents of water and debris swept through their village in Rasuwa. As the flood destroyed the school and transformed the surrounding landscape, Zoyal ran into a nearby forest and climbed a tree to escape the raging waters. He suffered a broken leg and cuts to his face but survived. His mother, Matti Maya Tamang, desperately searched shelters and collection points after fearing that her sons had perished. She eventually learned through a Reuters journalist that Zoyal was alive and had been taken to a hospital in Kathmandu. The emotional reunion came after Tamang had also found her younger son alive. “I had completely lost hope. I didn’t have my children,” she said, describing the devastating hours before learning that her sons had survived. The story comes amid a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Nepal and Tibet, with hundreds dead and thousands missing, while thousands of children have been affected by the floods.
