Watch this video as Firstpost explains how France is strategically pushing to restore its military influence in Africa’s turbulent Sahel region, leveraging its historic relationship with Chad. Less than two years after military governments across West Africa expelled French forces and Chad abruptly severed its six-decade defence pact, Paris and N’Djamena are rebuilding security cooperation. After high-level talks between French President Emmanuel Macron and Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby, France is set to deploy Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Chad for upcoming joint military training operations. However, this diplomatic thaw coincides with mounting regional instability. Neighbouring Niger has accused Chad of facilitating a French-backed drone strike in its northern border territory that reportedly left two civilians dead. While Chad denies any role in the attack, the incident highlights deep geopolitical fractures between Chad and anti-French military governments across the Sahel. Alyson Le Grange brings you more on this story on Firstpost Africa.
