Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan’s visit to the Kedarnath temple has triggered a controversy, bringing questions of religious identity, individual freedom and the right to worship into the spotlight.
An Islamic cleric has reportedly criticised the actor’s prayers at the Hindu shrine, describing the act as haram under Sharia and calling on her to repent. The remarks have sparked a wider debate: can religious authorities dictate where an individual chooses to pray? Does a fatwa carry any legal force in India? And when does religious guidance cross the line into moral policing?
A fatwa is generally understood as a religious opinion or interpretation issued by an Islamic scholar or authority. It does not, by itself, have the force of a court order or automatically create a legally enforceable restriction in India. The Constitution protects freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practise and propagate religion, subject to constitutional limitations.
