The 2026 US midterms are seeing a new generation enter the race for Congress, with Millennials and Gen Z accounting for over 36 per cent of congressional candidates, according to a Future Caucus report. From 28-year-old Republican Riley Owen in Utah to 27-year-old Democrat Caitlyn Gegen in Georgia, young candidates are campaigning on issues ranging from affordability and immigration to representation. Former President Barack Obama has also hit the campaign trail in Georgia, criticising Donald Trump’s White House ballroom spending as Democrats seek to challenge Republican control. But despite the generational shift, women remain underrepresented, particularly among Gen Z congressional candidates. Cary Johnston is joined by Suriya Jayanti, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council.
