U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for being a “humanitarian” after Moscow released 75-year-old retired American teacher Stephen Hubbard as a goodwill gesture on Wednesday, October 21. The release came as Witkoff met Putin in St Petersburg to discuss US-Russia ties, the war in Ukraine and Iran. The talks also focused on reviving US-mediated peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, as Washington intensifies pressure on Kyiv to reach a deal. Putin also offered to assist the US in dealing with Iran and supply fertiliser to American farmers.
