Students clashed with riot police in Pontianak, Indonesia, on October 21 during protests over months of forest fires, toxic haze, rising inflation, fuel shortages and a lack of job opportunities. Police used water cannons as demonstrators burned objects and chanted “Revolution”, demanding government action on environmental and economic concerns. The fires have worsened air pollution and contributed to respiratory illnesses, with haze spreading to neighbouring countries. Protesters warned they would intensify their movement if the government failed to address their demands.
