Donald Trump has called for Volodymyr Zelensky to be ousted, saying Ukraine needs a new leader who can end the war with Russia.
Ukrainian strikes on Moscow’s oil refineries provoked a furious response from the US president, who had agreed a deal to buy diesel from Vladimir Putin a day earlier.
Responding to two drone attacks on Saturday, Mr Trump said: “[Mr Zelensky] better damn well stop.
“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal.”
Mr Trump had requested that Kyiv stop its strikes against Russian oil refineries, which he believed were pushing up oil prices in the US.
The US president’s comments threaten to exacerbate tensions between the US and the UK, as Andy Burnham has offered Mr Zelensky his full support and pledged stronger sanctions on Moscow.
