Air India, Air India Express and Akasa Air have raised or reintroduced fuel surcharges from October 9, following IndiGo’s recent increase. Domestic surcharges range from ₹375 to ₹1,200, while international charges vary by airline and destination. Rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and geopolitical tensions are pushing up airline operating costs. But there is another concern: IndiGo and the Air India Group accounted for around 91% of India’s domestic aviation market in January 2026. What does this mean for passengers and competition?
