U.S. urges transparency from Russia on plague researcher’s death

The Trump administration is urging Russia to be more transparent about the death of a lab worker in Siberia last week. The case is suspected to be pneumonic plague. The State Department says it’s been in touch with Russia’s foreign ministry since the news first emerged last Friday.⁠

Secretary of State Marco Rubio sounded frustrated with the lack of information, but he wouldn’t speculate when asked whether this could have been a leak of a strain of the plague that was altered by Russia: “I think it’s incumbent upon Russia to obviously share more information with the world.”⁠

Arms control experts have expressed concern that Russia maintains an offensive biological warfare program.⁠
