The ‘unstable dynamic’ in the U.S.-China AI race

Listen to this article

Top tech executives met with President Donald Trump this week to discuss the future of artificial intelligence amid growing concerns over AI models losing control. Trump said the technology is transforming the economy and that the U.S. cannot afford to lose its lead over China.

“The U.S. absolutely has to maintain primacy in this technology,” says Chris McGuire, a senior fellow for China and emerging technologies at the Council of Foreign Relations.

“We’re at a very unstable dynamic where both the United States cannot accept being at parity with China, but it also can’t really convince China to accept being in second place right now,” he told Compass Points host Nick Schifrin.

Compass Points from PBS News analyzes prominent international affairs topics and America’s role in a shifting world, breaking down global conflicts, rising tensions, and their implications for U.S. interests. Visit the PBS News website to watch this week’s episode.
