Hawaii Army National Guard members helped residents navigate flooded streets near Naalehu on Saturday as heavy rain from Hurricane Nolo swept across the southern Big Island, bringing the threat of flash floods and mudslides. More than 120 Guard members were activated on the island, as part of about 400 deployed statewide after the governor issued an emergency proclamation. Nolo had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph) and was moving westward south of the Hawaiian Islands, with forecasters expecting it to strengthen into a major hurricane late Sunday or early Monday. Although the storm’s centre was not expected to make landfall and a hurricane watch had been cancelled, forecasters warned that its outer bands could produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, with parts of the Big Island potentially receiving up to 20 inches (51 centimetres) of rain.
