Pakistan has launched fresh airstrikes inside Afghanistan, targeting Kandahar, Paktia and Khost, according to Afghan officials. The Taliban government says four civilians were killed, while Pakistan says it carried out “precision aerial and drone strikes” against military targets linked to attacks on Pakistan. The latest escalation centres on the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Islamabad accuses the Afghan Taliban government of allowing TTP militant sanctuaries on Afghan soil, while Kabul denies the allegations and accuses Pakistan of violating Afghanistan’s sovereignty. The strikes come days after another deadly bombardment in eastern Afghanistan and a TTP-linked attack on a Pakistani police headquarters that killed at least 31 people. With the March Pakistan-Afghanistan ceasefire under pressure and cross-border violence continuing, tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban government are escalating again.
