French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s sovereignty over Saint Pierre and Miquelon, saying there was ‘no debate’ over the archipelago’s status following a social media post by US President Donald Trump showing an American flag over a map that included the French territory. During his visit, Macron stressed that the islands remain French territory and said residents were proud to be French.
The archipelago, home to around 5,800 people, is France’s only remaining territory in North America. Macron’s visit came ahead of talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on energy and Canada-EU relations, with Macron also urging Canada to increase liquefied natural gas exports to Europe.
