Typhoon Saudel has unleashed torrential rain and severe flooding across parts of China’s Fujian Province, with dramatic drone footage showing the scale of destruction in Fuding. Streets were covered in thick mud, vehicles were battered and debris was scattered across flood-hit areas.
Fuding, in Ningde, Fujian, recorded more than 400 mm of rainfall in 24 hours in several locations, with one area reaching 417.8 mm. Floodwaters rose to first-floor levels in some townships, while rescue teams worked to evacuate residents, clear roads and drain floodwater.
Typhoon Saudel made its third landfall in China in Zhangpu County, Fujian, on Thursday morning with maximum sustained winds of about 23 metres per second. More than 83,000 people had been evacuated across Fujian by Thursday morning as authorities suspended schools, transport and other activities in affected areas.
