The Ulchi Freedom Shield is an annual bilateral exercise between South Korea and the United States of America. However, the Ulchi Freedom Shield 2026 has been cut short after US President Donald Trump demanded South Korea to pay the US for depending on the US for security against North Korea. The drills, which were initially meant to be a 10-day long affair, were cut down to at least 5 days. Along with that, Trump also said that the drills were a major reason for raising tensions in the region and would be seen as ‘Hostile’ by North Korea and its leader Kim Jong Un. When the drills were announced this year, North Korea launched a ballistic missile to threaten the US and South Korea. Kim Jong Un also pledged to never give up his nuclear weapons. Now, South Korea has stated that it will decrease dependence on the US. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has stated that South Korea will increase its weapons manufacturing so it doesn’t have to rely on others. Why is Trump tilting towards North Korea, and does that give Kim Jong Un a clear advantage in the Korean Peninsula? Watch the full report on From the Frontline by Firstpost.
