TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s Navy staged an anti-landing drill as part of the 42nd Han Kuang military exercises, the island’s largest annual war games, running August 5-14. The live-fire phase, involving active-duty troops and roughly 20,000 reservists, is structured around four phases: combat readiness deployment, force protection, joint counter-landing operations, and sustained defense. According to Major General Lu Wen-yuan of the Ministry of National Defense’s Joint Operations Division, this year’s exercises are unscripted and simulate a scenario in which Chinese forces gather under the guise of a routine exercise before attempting a sea and air blockade followed by an amphibious assault across the Taiwan Strait. The drills mark the first participation of Taiwan’s newly delivered M1A2T Abrams tanks, assigned to protect key coastal and infrastructure sites in northern Taiwan, and the newly established Littoral Combat Command, which unifies the Navy’s anti-ship missile, coastal defense, radar and unmanned systems. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has said the drills are meant to test the military’s readiness against what it describes as Beijing’s use of routine exercises to mask invasion preparations; Beijing has previously criticized Taiwan’s drills as destabilizing and provocative.
