A pygmy hippo at Melbourne Zoo found the perfect way to stay warm during the city’s cold weather—by relaxing in his own heated pool.
Felix, a 270kg pygmy hippo, has a pool that stays at about 25°C (77°F) all year, keeping him comfortable even when temperatures drop.
On August 4, when Melbourne’s temperature was expected to fall to 8°C (46°F), Felix was seen walking around his enclosure before climbing into his warm pool.
Zoo keeper Alex Ward said the steaming water on cold mornings makes staff jealous and tempted to dip their feet in.
As a semi-aquatic animal, Felix uses the pool to sleep, eat and swim.
